Lavanya Athithan

Dr Athithan is a Consultant Cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and an Honorary Senior Lecturer with the University of Leicester. She is experienced and well versed in dealing with all aspects of cardiology and subspecialises in Multimodality Cardiac Imaging - transthoracic echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT- as well as Heart Failure. As part of her role as a heart failure doctor, she specialises in holistic, individualised patient care.

She graduated in medicine from Cardiff University receiving numerous undergraduate awards during this time. Subsequently she was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians UK and went on to complete her training in Cardiology in the East Midlands.

She was awarded a competitive British Heart Foundation Clinical Training Fellowship to complete her PhD focussed on cardiac structural and functional changes in Type II diabetes with a focus on Cardiac MRI and Heart Failure. She was also received recognition from the National Institute for Health Research and Royal College of Physicians for outstanding leadership and contribution to NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio Studies.

She is currently the Clinical Lead for Cardiac Amyloidosis in Leicestershire and has established a dedicated Cardio-Oncology Service across the University Hospitals of Leicester.

She is passionate about teaching and training and remains actively involved in research, education and specialist training. She is accredited in echocardiography, Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT by the relevant UK and international professional societies. She was recently selected as an ambassador for British Cardiovascular Society and Virginia Chamber of the American College of Cardiology Advanced Imaging Fellowship
