He specialises in the treatment of all vascular conditions, with a particular interest in minimally invasive keyhole techniques for varicose veins and aneurysm repair.

His clinical interests encompass varicose vein surgery — including VNUS closure, radiofrequency ablation and foam sclerotherapy — endovascular aneurysm repair, angioplasty, and the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Akin led the development of the complex endovascular aneurysm repair programme in Nottingham, and has been treating varicose veins for over 28 years.

A committed educator, Akin has been actively involved in vascular surgery training in the East Midlands and internationally since 2006, and currently serves as Training Programme Director for Vascular Surgery with Health Education England, East Midlands.
